Tooth Grinding and Dental Veneers

Category:

One of the more less-known sleeping disorders is known as bruxism, or tooth grinding. While technically an oral condition, it is categorized as a sleeping disorder because it most frequently occurs during the night. Depending on how far the condition has progressed, it can have anywhere from a minimal to a profound impact on the appearance of your teeth. Those with severe cases of bruxism have often grinded their teeth so much that they have taken on a linear appearance. This obviously doesn't help with one's self confidence, so naturally many bruxism patients look to cosmetic dentistry for relief.

Dental veneers are a prime choice for repairing most dental abnormalities because they are quick solution and yield natural looking results. Considering the unique nature of this condition, how suitable are veneers for patients who suffer from tooth grinding? Well, it really depends on how willing they are to take preventative measures. These restorations are made of porcelain, which although a durable material is not resistant to grinding or clenching (which is yet another symptom that is common with the disorder). The clenching is the most difficult issue to address and a very limited number of treatments are available. Dental veneers will fracture if far too much pressure is applied to them at a given moment. For someone who experiences clenching symptoms, they are best avoided. However, the effects of the nightly grinding can be mitigated by wearing a mouth guard (which is typically used in the conventional treatment of bruxism). You will have to get this guard replaced regularly so as to protect the veneers.

The bottom line is that veneers are an acceptable choice if you are willing to embark on some treatment to prevent damage. If not, they too will eventually be grinded down into linear blocks. Only your dentist will have the final word on how good of a candidate you are for the procedure, so set up a consultation as soon as possible. You will want to look especially hard for an experienced cosmetic dentist as to ensure a pleasant experience given the added complications.
